The Boy Who Walked Away: St Walstan of Bawburgh

Instead of privilege, he chose a life of humble farm work, prayer, and generosity.

What would make a twelve-year-old walk away from everything? Walstan was born in or near Bawburgh around the year 975. Tradition says he came from a wealthy family. His future could have been secure and comfortable. But after encountering the teachings of Jesus about giving up wealth and following God, Walstan made an extraordinary choice. He gave away his inheritance. Instead of privilege, he chose a life of humble farm work, prayer, and generosity. He lived simply among ordinary people, caring deeply for those around him, and, according to local stories, even for animals. His faith wasn’t loud or showy. It was steady, practical, and deeply rooted. When Walstan died, his body was carried back towards Bawburgh on an ox-drawn cart. Along the way, legend says springs of fresh water appeared, places that became known for healing and prayer. Pilgrims travelled to them for centuries, and one still flows near Bawburgh today. A young person who chose faith over status. A quiet life that left a lasting mark. A small stream that still runs. What would make a twelve-year-old walk away from everything?
